ST. ANDREW’S-WESLEY UNITED

Bold and colourful stair wrap designs, reflecting values of spirit, social justice, and inclusivity

St. Andrew’s-Wesley United Church an open-hearted, open-minded, inclusive church located in downtown Vancouver. Their front steps are a beautiful canvas to showcase their values of spirit, art, social justice, and inclusion as a way to connect with the community. Designing for the stairs is always a unique challenge, and my approach is to lean into bold, graphic shapes to ensure the design reads clearly from a distance and across different viewing angles.

JULY 2025

A reinterpretation of the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag, inspired by the shape of rainbows and waves—where the striped colours of the flag form large, flowing waves.

MARCH 2026

The concept was to represent a justice-themed quote as a flowing river. I illustrated a series of overlapping waves in varying shades of blue to create a sense of movement down the staircase.

JUNE 2026

As Vancouver is a host city of the 2026 World Cup, St. Andrew's-Wesley wanted to take the opportunity to represent their value of inclusivity and celebrate LGBTQIA2S+ athletes.

Naturally, I thought of starting with the form of a soccer ball, and wanted to think of a unique way to capture all the aspects that St. Andrew's-Wesley wanted to represent. My concept was to reimagine the soccer ball in a kaleidoscope pattern, symbolizing both the uniqueness of each person and the collective beauty of an inclusive community. The design features radiating lines that extend outward, expressing positivity and strength, while the varied shapes within the ball reflect the colours of the Intersex-Inclusive Progress Pride Flag. The design is framed with St. Andrew's promise: “No matter who you are, no matter who you love, all of you is welcome here.”

“Cheryl is a dream to work with. She is so skilled at weaving themes of justice, spirit and art together in our stairs and understands our commitment to public art and discourse. Add in the fact that she is organized, a great communicator and sincere, we truly feel lucky to have found a collaborator like her!”
