the client

Vancouver Foundation is Canada's largest community foundation, working throughout British Columbia to harness the gifts of ideas, money, time and energy to build a lasting legacy: healthy, vibrant, livable communities.

the brief

Vancouver Foundation was seeking an illustrator to help with creating a holiday e-card that would be included in their email newsletter for their donors. Their goal was to create an illustration that would represent community connection, unity, and gratitude in a winter scene.

the approach

I presented the concept of viewing different groups of people through their windows, showing a sense of community and connection with others but also speaking to how we may be physically apart during the holiday season of 2020. As the Vancouver Foundation supports charities and organizations throughout British Columbia (BC), the client wanted to ensure that the scene could fit with different BC communities and neighbourhoods, and weave in elements of BC nature in the background. It was also important that the image represents diversity and inclusivity, and feel festive without using Christmas-specific or holiday-specific decor.

Happy Holidays Illustration for the Vancouver Foundation | Cheryl Loh | Vancouver Illustrator

“I was impressed how attentive Cheryl was at incorporating all of our requests into a fun, creative piece. Additionally, it was very easy to work with her because she was so well organized. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive on the design both internally from staff and externally from donors. Given the difficult year in 2020, we wanted to make sure that we hit the right tone with a card that represented community, connection despite distance, warmth, diversity, and inclusion.”
