IMPACT INVESTING HUB ILLUSTRATIONS
A series of illustrations to help convey the story behind financing community energy projects
The Impact Investing Hub at the University of Victoria is a research and education center dedicated to bringing people together to learn, connect, and collaborate to align finance and investments with climate and sustainability action.
The team was looking for illustrations to represent their mission of financing community energy projects. The illustrations are featured on their tool, “Community Energy Finance Navigator”, which provides financial information to community leaders. There were two main concepts that they wanted to highlight: how renewable energy projects (primarily solar and wind) are funded by different sources, and the flow of funds being reinvested back into the community by democratic and community-led models.

Illustration
The first illustration represents the “layers” of funding that made a community energy project possible. Each layer has an icon to represent a different type of funding: community funding, government funding, and corporate/private funding.
The second illustration aims to represent how the flow of funds from energy projects is reinvested back into the community. The “flow” shape follows the form of the infinity symbol to represent the continual reinvestment back into the community. Community governance is represented in the center, linking the energy projects and community assets together.
“Cheryl was extremely professional and efficient to work with, and kindly set up a work program within our (tight) delivery deadlines. The illustrations she made captured all of our needs, and turned a technical, abstract concept into a friendly, informative image. We were really grateful for all her ideas and experience and enjoyed working together.”
